Disclaimer: an exception to all of this was the 'disco' generation..wtf were they thinking? |
I loved disco. It was
the crazed offspring of funk and R&B after all. Nae kidding. So
much so that I just bought a bass tutorial by Josquin des Pres
beautifully titled: "70's Funk & Disco Bass." And, for me, disco
was defined by the pumping, octaving bass line.
Are you trying to tell me that Bernard Edwards didn't swing bass so
divinely that his influence is clear and loud to this very day? What
about Abraham Laboriel, Marcus Miller and the inimitable Doug Wimbish?
Wimbish was the house bass player for Sugarhill recordings and his
invention and style leaked eventually into HipHop. The self-same HipHop
that not only nods in respect to disco, but positively headbangs in
delight at the awesome palette of sonic wonders so brilliantly
delivered by the best disco has to offer.
Disco was as creative and inspirational for some musicians as Dylan's self-indulgent pap was to others.
WTF were we discoheads thinking about? It was an awesome time in my
life. I wouldn't exchange all the dance-hi-drugs, sex, ass-shaking
mania and joy that my disco years inspired for anything.
But, most of all, we we thinking of and listening to the great music the genre poured into our ears. _________________ Buaidh No Bas ya bass. |

The
doctor is in. I suggest you immediately watch 'Saturday Night Fever'
while simultaneously listening to the Bee Gees greatest hits at full
volume until this passes.
(If that dosn't work, I understand that the Village People are looking
for a man in kilts.... not to sing mind you...its just a matter of
convenience.)

You mean your band doesnt sound like it does in real life?! Welcome to recording my friend....
You will learn how to work around these problems. Sm57 and/or room
condensor mic in a decent room for the guitar, on edge of speaker.
Bass, DI it. I use a Sanamp bass DI and the signal with a Fender P just kicks ass.
Vocals, large body condensor, get a pop filter too.
Drums..whoa..be careful here
2 stereo overheads, close miced snare, and kick, and usually close miced toms. Rarely close-miced cymbals.
Thats a rundown of the basic setup. The rest..well just experiment
Also, the G is a 16-bit .wav unit, which is standard audio-CD.
going from different 16-bit devices, you will not notice a difference
in record quality. Just get decent preamps, good mics, and a hell of a
lot of free time, and youll be on your way. _________________ My friends band...this will definetly make you feel better about yourself

Hey,
guys, I don't have the stomach to read through this thread, especially
after the spirit turned south. I agree with the basic point that many
folks made, though: you can't rush the damned engineering process in a
few days of learning and a series of emergency messages.
It's not rocket science, but it's close enough for many newbies (like me, at least at first).
My question: Can anyone tell me what happened to this impatient
guy? Did he ever find any peace with his G, or is he cursing it, us,
and our site to anyone who'll listen?
Just curious,
J.
P.S. Judging by his thread title, I'm thinking that he could be a
Yamaha insider--the guy who penned the G's famed "professioinal" screen. |

Sorry to hear about you problems with the G. Your not going to find
many people on this board who think this machine is crap. It is the
best musical investment I have made. I use my G with a Johnson J
station, Two drum machines and pads to suppliment for real feel, Yamaha
keys and four condenser mics and we are getting great results. Download
the info you were told about and read it! This is a very well thought
out machine but you have to know at least the basics. Good Luck! |

I've
had my recorder for awhile. I still have the manual. Sorry to hear that
youre not having much luck. You might have gotten a better response if
you just asked actual questions instead of complaining. |

Gmusic,
I'm just a newbie here at this forum, but I've been recording analog
for thirty + years and digital for at least five. If you've never run a
digital deck and you expect to rent one with no manual, and start
recording a critical project to be finished post haste, I have to ask, What were you thinking?
I think you could get a lot of help here, but if time is of the
essence, return the G and put your money towards recording time at a
small local studio. There are fairly accomplished guys all over the
place with project studios in their homes who could fix you up for cheap usually.
Then maybe buy a G, with the proper expectation of READING THE MANUAL
for week before you even unwrap the plastic off of the unit. The
learning curve, for even an accomplished analog engineer, moving to
digital is steep! It just seems like you're getting hostile at the
wrong guys for a decision that was poorly thought out.
BTW, ten days at the rental rate you specified more than buys the G brand new with manuals. _________________ The only thing that never changes, is that everything is variable. |
